Free mileage log template
Print it for your glovebox, or download it for Excel or Google Sheets. It has a row for every trip and totals at the bottom.
The CSV opens in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets. The miles column fills itself from the odometer readings.
What to record for each trip
The IRS asks for records made at or near the time of the trip. For each business trip, write down:
- Date of the trip
- Where you went (start and destination)
- Business purpose (for example, "site visit, Smith job")
- Miles, from odometer readings or a map
Details are in IRS Publication 463, chapter 5 (Recordkeeping).
